For years, I’ve been wondering how best to share what I’ve learned about our family’s history. In my mind, I’ve pictured elegant books and polished websites filled with photos, maps, documents, and—of course—stories. It’s tempting to wait until everything is polished and perfect, tied up in a neat little bow, before sharing it with you. But that dream of perfection has been keeping me from starting at all. And the truth is, a project like this might never feel “finished.”
So instead of reaching for perfect, I’ve decided it’s better to simply begin. I may not be beginning at the “beginning,” and I certainly don’t have everything mapped out, but sometimes it’s best to just dive in. It might get a little messy and meandering along the way, but hopefully, it’ll take shape as we go.
A blog feels like the best way to do this — a flexible way to share what I know while letting you, my family, help shape the stories that matter most. Maybe someday it will grow into something more — a full-fledged website, or even a printed collection — but for now, this feels like the right place to start.
Over time, I plan to post bits and pieces about our ancestors: what I know, what I’ve discovered, and what I’m still puzzling over. I’ve found that the best way to share this kind of information is by answering questions, so I hope you’ll ask lots of them! I’ll add more details as I remember them, as I uncover new records, and as your questions lead me in new directions.
Now, I’ll admit—I don’t know much about the technical side of blogging. I’m hoping to use the comment section as a place for conversation between us (once I figure out how to make that work!). If you have any tips, tricks, or ideas for making this easier or more fun, I’d love your input.
To be honest, this journey will probably be a little untidy at times, but hopefully, it will be fun and interesting too. I’m going to try to resist my perfectionist tendencies and keep posting, even when things feel incomplete. I suspect that your questions and feedback will be what keep me moving forward—and I’m counting on that!
Eventually, I’d love for this blog to evolve into a more organized website where each ancestor has their own page — like a growing family album of photos and stories. That’s a long way off, and the technical details are still outside my wheelhouse, but it’s something to dream about.
For now, this blog is really just meant for our extended family — which includes a lot of cousins of different degrees. Since we don’t all share the same ancestors, some posts might be more relevant to some than to others. I’ll do my best to tag posts so everyone can easily find what connects to their part of the tree.
That’s enough for today. Thank you for taking the time to read—and for joining me as I finally begin this long-dreamed-of project. I’m so looking forward to sharing our family’s stories, one post at a time.
